Trust & safety
Learning often involves children, homes and money, so trust is built into how Blueblack works. This page explains exactly what we check and how payments and sessions are handled — and what we do not do.
What do you check before a tutor is listed?
Every tutor completes an application and our verification team reviews it before the profile becomes public. The documents we ask for depend on what the tutor offers:
| Check | When it applies | |
|---|---|---|
| Identity document All tutors: South African ID, smart card or passport. |
Every tutor | Required |
| Highest qualification certificate Certified copy of your highest relevant qualification. |
Every tutor | Required |
| Police clearance certificate For tutors who work with learners under 18. |
Tutors who work with learners under 18 | Required |
| Proof of address For tutors who offer in-person lessons. |
Tutors who teach in person | Required |
| Driving instructor certificate Accredited instructor certificate for driving lessons. |
For driving | Required |
| Driving licence Current driving licence for the codes you teach. |
For driving | Required |
| SACE registration Recommended for qualified educators. Switch to required in Admin → Content if your policy needs it. |
For school subjects | Optional |
We also contact references and verify qualifications. Documents can expire — for example a police clearance — and tutors are reminded to upload a current copy.
How are facilitators, assessors and moderators checked?
Practitioners add each SETA, QCTO or professional-body registration with its registration number and letter. Our team checks the registration and its scope against the letter before it appears on their profile, and registrations are hidden automatically when they expire. Identity, CV and qualification are also reviewed.
How do payments work?
Clients pay by EFT into the Blueblack business account using a unique reference, after accepting a quotation that shows every charge. Our finance team checks each payment against the bank statement before a booking goes ahead. Tutors are paid by EFT after sessions are confirmed (target: 7 days). For practitioner engagements, Blueblack holds the payment until the work is completed.
How are sessions recorded?
Every lesson has a digital logbook: the tutor checks in, records the topics covered and the time, and the client confirms or raises a problem. Disputes freeze the tutor's payment until our team decides.
How is personal information protected?
Exact addresses are never shown publicly — profiles show a suburb and an approximate distance. Phone numbers and email addresses are removed from on-platform messages, so personal contact details are not shared by accident. Bank account and ID numbers are stored encrypted. Read our privacy policy.
How do I report a concern?
If you are worried about the safety of a learner, report it here — reports go straight to our safeguarding team. If a child is in immediate danger, contact the South African Police Service first.
What we do not claim
Checks reduce risk; they cannot remove it. We verify documents and record sessions, but parents and learners should still agree where lessons take place, keep communication on the platform, and tell us about anything that feels wrong.
